Your personal brand is more fragile than you might imagine. You need to be vigilant in maintaining the look, feel & tone of your personal brand. All it can take is one big brand mistake, especially one that you handle poorly and all that you’ve built can disappear overnight. So here are five mistakes that you don’t want to make in order to maintain your powerful personal brand.
Mistake #1: Letting Your Brand Stagnate
Your personal brand, no matter how well crafted, is never “done”. Your personal brand is constantly changing and developing over time like you are as an individual. Make sure that you stay on top of your brand, by creating content, voicing and sharing opinions and regularly contributing to discussions in your particular niche.
Mistake #2: Neglecting Consistency
Being inconsistent is a total brand killer. People like to know what to expect; it gives them comfort and solidifies that they can count on you. You need to be consistent in all your marketing, in how you dress, with what you say and how you behave. Consistency is absolutely key so that people know what to expect from you and trust what you stand for.
Mistake #3 Having an Unprofessional Online Image
You’ve worked so hard to establish yourself as a trusted professional. You dress the part, you produce great work, work long hours and then you blow it with a picture on Facebook looking extremely drunk and dishevelled with a vodka bottle in your hand. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for letting your hair down but you don’t need to share that image with the entire world! Monitor pictures of yourself online and regularly check your privacy setting on your social media accounts.
Mistake #4 Being Inauthentic
Successful personal brands are based on authenticity. That means you need to be you. If you’re building a brand on what you think you should be instead of what you are, you’ll most likely fail. If you misrepresent your experience or skill set, you will be discovered. Don’t call yourself an expert unless you are. Build your brand from a position of strength which means basing it on the real truth.
Mistake #5 Losing Focus
Being scattered dilutes your brand. When you do too many things or inconsistent with your messaging, you appear to lack focus and people don’t fully understand what you stand for. Know who you are and exactly what you stand for. Identify your core work and be true to your brand.
Here’s the bottom line.
These five mistakes can make or break your personal brand in a matter of seconds. I encourage you to take a deeper look at your own personal brand and if/how you are actually living it. If done wrong, and you leave it up to your market to figure out who you are and what you do, you’re leaving things to chance. If done right, your market will seek you out and trust you as an authority in your field.
